RAMBLINGS 2009

The Final Word 2009!

First and foremost, Happy New Year!!  I anticipate 2010 will be a more prosperous year for everyone.  As for 2009, it was a rough one for many including myself but I am only here to talk about the toy side of things.  I already expressed my feeling regarding 2009 as a disappointing year for toy collecting.  For the most part it was expected.  Toy companies plan at least a year ahead for their toy lines and with the economic downturn, toy companies were already prepared.  I guess my biggest question and concern is whether toy companies have planned with a hopeful eye on the future or will we see another year of sparse toy shelves?  I think things will show signs of improvement especially with Transformers and GI Joe coming off the exhausting movie toy lines but it won't be like it was three years ago.  The most important thing I want to see change from 2009 are retail toy prices.  Eight bucks for a 3 3/4" action figure is mighty steep and I hope it is not the new standard.

I have to admit, my interests in toys is going East to the Japanese market.  I have always loved Japanese toys but now it's to the point that I have a hard time spending money on subpar US toys when I know when I order a Takara Transformer or a Bandai S.O.C., I am going to get my moneys worth.  I hope the US market proves me wrong because Japanese imports are ten times the cost of the already inflated US toys.

I am still dreaming that in 2010 we may finally see a revival of the beloved 80's toy line, the Thundercats.  I think Mattel and the Four Horsemen could make this series worth the long wait if the obtained it and I honestly could deal with the thirty dollar delivered price tag they have made standard with Masters of the Universe.  Nevertheless, I think it is a hopeless wish.  Every year since the mid-1990's, I have been anticipating the return of Thundercats.

2009 gave toy collectors many disappointments but I would be wrong if I did not recognize the good.  Mattel set some new standards and I hope others were paying attention.  Also, the addition of the direct market action figures in Toys R Us opens the doors for greater distribution for some of the indie toy companies and who knows, perhaps Toys R Us may start carrying imports.

Well, signing off for 2009.  Come back in 2010 for many new Reviews, Ramblings, new for sale merchandise and plenty more surprises.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Top Ten Transformers of 2009!

I cannot tell a lie.  This has been the most disappointing year for Transformers since Transformers Armada.  I know there are a lot of fans of the Transformers movie toys and I recognize that the movie has ushered in many new fans and I am happy about that but the toy designs are not my thing.  As a matter of fact, I despise them.  With that said, I still recognize the great attempt the designers made with what they had to work with.  Last year, we had a variety of lines to collect with Animated, classics and whatever outstanding products Takara Tomy was producing but 2009 was virtually Revenge of the Fallen or bust.  This was the most difficult year end Transformers list I had to put together and not in a good way.  I would have much preferred that there were so many good products that it was hard to narrow it down to just ten.  In this case I had a difficult time finding ten items outstanding enough to make the list.  Nevertheless, there were a few gems and I recognize that.  Without further adieu, here are my top ten Transformers of 2009.

10. Animated Samurai Prowl - Just as 2009 began, the Animated series was ending.  Samurai Prowl is an amazing feat in engineering.  I love how the designers was able to take an existing toy, make a few tweaks and provide a sidecar that becomes armor.  This is a unique Transformer.  Samurai Prowl, although cool, probably would not have made the list from previous years but in such a thin year, he becomes a stand out.

9. Leader Class Revenge of the Fallen Optimus Prime - In my original review, I pretty much trashed this toy.  The transformation was clunky and difficult and Hasbro apparently forgot to finish painting this guy.  With that said, I am amazed that the designers where able to take the complex design of the robot and actually find a way to make this transform and still make it fairly movie accurate.

8.  Animated Wreck-Gar - Another Animated tail-ender.  Wreck-Gar is one of those robots that I always wanted to see re-done.  This Animated version is very well done and matches his cartoon look spot on.  Like Samurai Prowl, in a better year, Wreck-Gar may have been side lined.

7. Human Alliance Bumblebee - I had high hopes that the Human Alliance series would be the second coming of Alternators.  It is far from it but with that said, HA Bumblebee is one of the best movie styled Transformers to get released.  This is a great toy with a fun transformation and a nice looking robot.  When I first got this, I was far more excited about it than I am now (having recently revisited it).  Nevertheless, it is still one of the better Transformers to come out this year.

6. Alternity Megatron - You can usually rely on Takara Tomy to pick up the slack from Hasbro's miss-steps.  Alternity is the best series to come out since Binaltech.  The Alternity Megatron depicts this baddie as a samurai warrior.  I like the refreshing update.  This figure is loaded with die-cast metal, detail and a fun challenging Transformation.  It could have perhaps faired better on this list if it didn't share a similar aesthetic to the Alternity Convoy that was released just a couple of months prior.

5. Universe Classics Inferno - I have never been the biggest supporter of Universe Classics.  I feel Hasbro took far too many shortcuts with the series.  However, when I got Inferno, I had a new respect.  Inferno really harkened back to the original Transformers look with his boxy shape.  His transformation was great as was the sculpt.  His head design is one of the best I've seen in years.  The only real improvements that I could see is perhaps the water launcher could have been a latter instead.

4. E-Hobby Exclusive Masterpiece Black Convoy - I had mixed feelings towards adding this to the list because this mold has been around for some years now but in such an empty year it was hard for me to ignore this beautiful repaint of my all time favorite Transformer. '

3. Alternity Bumble/Cliffjumper - I, like many Transfans was on the fence about this design.  It looked okay to me but I wasn't 100% about it.  Once in hand, all my concerns were gone.  These are amazing homage's to everyone's favorite penny racer robots.

2. Alternity Convoy - I know a lot of Transfans have issues with Optimus Prime being anything but a semi truck but for me, I welcome this version of the Autobots leader.  I personally always wanted to see Prime as a fast sports car and Takara truly delivered.  With Binaltech now gone, Alternity is king.  Whether you prefer this mold in red, silver or black is your prerogative.  Either way, this is one of my favorite Prime's ever.

1. Masterpiece Grimlock - They aren't called Masterpiece's for nothing.  Takara comes through with another brilliant addition to their Masterpiece series.  This is easily the best Grimlock toy ever made and easily my favorite Transformer of 2009.

2009.  A Year in Review  12-14-09

Well here we are again.  Another year has come and gone.  For action figure collectors, it was a tough one.  Retail prices were through the roof.  Gone are the days of the six dollar action figure.  The standard action figure was fetching anywhere from eight to fourteen bucks.  I personally found it rather difficult to shell out eight bucks for a 3 3/4 inch action figure.  However, it did force me to be more selective about my purchases. I found 2009 to be one of the lightest years for my buying habits not only due to high prices but because of the painful Transformers Revenge of the Fallen toys.  I was not nearly as disgusted with the toys during the first movie but that may have been due to Hasbro at least providing some other Transformers options.  This time around, store shelves were loaded with robots that looked like crumpled up metal.  I can now officially say that I despise the Transformers movie in every way.

G.I. Joe was another toy line that made the drastic change from an amazing series (25th Anniversary) to the movie toys.  I am rather ambivalent towards the movie but I did find some of the toys enjoyable.  With that said, I look forward to Hasbro moving on.  Hopefully in  the same direction as the incredible Resolute.

Some of the other noteworthy action figure lines (for better or worse) were: Masters of the Universe Classics.  An amazing re-entry into the world of action figures but with their fair share of problems.  Mostly dealing with high prices and bad distribution.  This is nothing new for Mattel Toys.  DC Universe Classics continues to make strides in become one of the finest superhero toy series' ever but they share the same problems with MOTU Classics.  Hasbro changed things up with Marvel superhero toys by shrinking them down in size to 3 3/4 inches.  Even though this is my favorite action figure scale, superheroes just seem to work better in a larger scale.  Star Wars was a pleasant surprise for me.  Sure, I still have my issues but Hasbro made Star Wars more fun to collect then it has been in a few years.

Sadly. 2009 may have been the weakest year for action figures of this decade.  Don't get me wrong, there were some nice products but with some of the weak efforts from the big dogs over at Hasbro, it really made for a tough collecting experience.  I am hopeful for 2010.  With the movie toy lines for both Transformers and G.I. Joe wrapping up, I am staying optimistic for the future.

Stay tuned for the Top Ten Transformers of 2009!

Just Thinking  11-25-09

Well, here we are.  The holiday season.  Which means we are closing in at the end of the year.  I'm not going to go in some end of the year rant (just yet) but as I have said so many times, due to the  Transformers movie toys, this was such a bleak year for Transformers.  However, there is hope for next year.  Toys R Us will be getting the remainder of the figures from the incredible Animated series and Hasbro should be announcing details regarding the next Transformers series.  I have a feeling that they are going to have a "movie look".  Blah!! Nevertheless, if Hasbro blows it there is always hope for cool Transformers from Takara.  I am ready to get my hands on the Alternity Bumblebee & Cliffjumper.  It seems like forever for these to come out.  I certainly hope Takara continues this series.  I am not into it the same level I was with Binaltech but Alternity is still great and better than any other Transformers line on the market.  What even has me more excited, in a recent interview with the designer of most of the Masterpiece's, it was hinted that the next one may be Rodimus Prime of Hot Rod!  This would be very good news.  Sure, I am a bigger Optimus Prime fan but Rodimus was cool and I still don't feel he has ever gotten his rightful due.  I love the Kissplay Rodimus but it isn't the original Rod.  I also like the Classics version but it is too small to be an ultimate version and yes, I am greatly anticipating the Animated Rodimus but it is a stylized version of the character.

I do look forward on ranting about this year in toys as there were some great triumphs but also some terrible disappointments as well.  Until then, have a great holiday!

Resolute (City Strike) Snake Eyes  10-27-09

It feels like a long time since I have actually found myself driving around from store to store looking for a specific action figure but this last week, I have been on the hunt for the Resolute (City Strike) Snake Eyes.  What is it about this figure that has gotten me out of the house?  Besides the fact that I really enjoyed the Resolute cartoon and I am a big Snake Eyes fan, I think it may be all the glowing reviews for this figure and the fact that we haven't really seen a new relevant Snake Eyes costume since the second one was released in the mid-1980's.  This is not to say I haven't liked some of the other ones but they were just to keep the character fresh in kid's minds.  None of them were featured in the cartoon and I'm not sure how prominent they were in the comic book but here we have a fresh new take on Snake Eyes that kicks ass on the small screen and carries the essence of the classic character.

I still haven't found this figure and I am even resorting to paying scalper prices but if any of the fine Primetoystore readers has an extra one, please let me know as I would be very grateful.

To Mattel or not to Mattel?  10-09-09

Mattel Toys are arguably making some of the nicest US toys out there.  With DC Classics, Masters of the Universe, Ghostbusters, Movie Masters and now Avatar, Mattel is hitting the pulse of the collector but at what cost?  Well, at quite a large cost.  Besides their toys retailing for a higher price than most action figures the real cost is in frustration.

Mattel has done a knock out job with DC Classics but not only are they nearly impossible to find at retail but if you do find them, they are going to easily cost you twelve bucks a pop.  It is a pretty cringe worthy price but I am willing to pay that for a great figure but Mattel keeps releasing new assortments when the previous one's are still no where to be found.  This to me is an overload.  I am nearly ready to give up.  Not to mention exclusives and box sets.  I have a hard time trying to complete a line that includes exclusives that run an exorbitant price let alone box sets that may feature one new character.

Moving on, there is the exceptional Masters of the Universe Classics.  At first, this Mattycollector.com exclusive series was a challenge to order before they sold out but Mattel has improved distribution.  However, you have to be willing to shell out nearly thirty bucks a figure shipped!  Wow!  Talk about expensive.

Now Mattel is introducing the Ghostbusters.  These look great but I have a feeling Mattel is going to try to milk this license.  Honestly, other than the four Ghostbusters who else do we really need?

Finally, the figures from James Cameron's Avatar film are starting to hit stores.  Mattel has produced both Movie Masters and a standard 3 3/4" scale.  I am particularly interested in the standard figures but at ten bucks a figure, this movie better be awesome.  I think I may wait till they are on clearance.  Although the figures look pretty good, they are just a bunch of humans and tall blue aliens. Not a great deal of variety

I have a love/hate relationship with Mattel.  I like that they are making nice looking fun action figures but the price and distribution just aren't cutting it for me.

Will Action Figures Be Nostalgic for the Next Generation?  09-29-09

I was Perusing the internet the other day when I came across an interesting question that was posed as a way to create dialogue in a forum.  The question was an appealing one and did in fact make me think about it:  can modern toys become nostalgic?

It didn't take long to come to a conclusion.  Yes, modern action figures will become nostalgic.  Children will always grow up with fond memories of the toys they played with and action figures are still apart of that.  Sure, action figure sales are not nearly as bloated as they were in the 1980's.  With the amount of technology and gadgets out there for consumption and the level of play value a person can get from video games and computers amongst other electronic toys, the interest in action figures has surely decreased.  However, action figures are by no means dead.  Toys R' Us still houses isles dedicated specifically for action figures. Toy lines such as Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Pokeman and the newly popular Ben 10 are selling well.  Star Wars toys still fly off the shelves amongst kids as well as collectors.

Perhaps, we all feel that what ever childhood we were born into is the greatest.  I know I do.  I couldn't imagine not growing up without Star Wars, G.I. Joe. and Transformers and today's children don't have to as there are an array of different products from all of those toy lines taking up a great deal of shelf space.  Even if they don't seem as cool as the originals, they are mostly superior in construction and design.  It's toy lines such as Battle Beasts, Thundercats, Masters of the Universe, Go-Bots, M.A.S.K. and Silverhawks in which I feel sorry for the younger generations for not having the luxery to grow up with but they have an opportunity to discover them as adults just as I did with Mego's, Micronauts and Shogun Warriors.

There is a good chance that a child of today may find agreat deal more nostalgia in video games and other modern toys but I grew up with Atari, Speak N Spell and even Nintendo.  I feel nostalgic about those playthings too but it was the action figure and their accompanied cartoons that started this obsessive passion.  I am sure that many children out there are going to grow up and wish they still had all their Ben 10 action figures, then hit Ebay and compulsively bid on all the Ben 10 items they owned as a child and after they get the items they had, they are likely to move onto the action figures they always wanted.  Thus, the wicked cycle continues.

Transformers, Where are you?  09-22-09

I know that I tend to complain quite a bit regarding my ambivalence towards the Transformers movie toys and designs but the Transformers universe has felt so nonexistent in such awhile.  This time last year I was hunting down the amazing Animated figures and even some of the lackluster Classics line.  Not to mention anticipating the short lived return of Takara's Binaltech.  I am just like most other Americans stung by the economy and to a point am thanking Hasbro for the dull variety of Transformers toys amongst other stagnant toy lines that they produce that normally I desire.  However, even a toy collector on a thin budget needs his fix and there are few toy companies satisfying my needs.

It is slowly creeping into holiday season and there is not one domestic Transformer I am anticipating.  The only Transformers I am awaiting are Takara's Alternity Bumblebee and Cliffjumper and the new Masterpiece Black Convoy (which is just an expensive repaint of a toy I own several times over).  Normally, "Transfans" at least have an idea of what to expect to see in the upcoming seasons.  Perhaps, pictures to gaze upon of the future for the popular brand and hopefully it is something to be desired as we will be spending the next couple of years loving or hating it but Hasbro has provided no pictures, information not even a hint.  Therefore creating both elevated anticipation and excitement which in turn could create the same with disappointment.

Transformers is not the only brand that has keeped me from endless trips to the toy isle.  With G.I. Joe also stuck in movie mode and the loss of Indiana Jones amongst other lackluster new lines, only Mattel has kept me somewhat interested in domestic action figures but with their distribution and high cost figures, I am really contemplating how long I want to keep up.

So, yeah.  I guess I'm saying that thus far this has been a rather dismal year for domestic toys.  Not to say there hasn't been some amazing products just that the usual favorites and some hopefuls have been in a real funk.  I certainly hope next year, our economy has seen improvement and Hasbro and other toy companies provide the greatness they did this time last year.

Alternity Wish List  09-10-09

I remember when Transformers Binaltech/Alternators was a fresh new line and I used to day dream of what I would hope to see as the series progressed.  Binaltech/Alternators had a nice life but it's over and the day dreaming is gone.  However, in the past year, Takara has started a new series very similar to the line of die-cast metal infused realistic transforming cars but this time around with Alternity, Takara Tomy are producing a smaller scale series.  Alternity shares many similar features as Binaltech but without a partnership with Hasbro, the automobiles featured are to date of only Japanese manufacturer's.  There are many Japanese auto's that appeal to me but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't love to see some American and European models.  Nevertheless, Alternity has me committed and the excitement is back!  So, without further ado, here are the top ten characters I want to see added to Alternity (due to my lack of knowledge of many Japanese auto's, I will refrain from naming specific model's I'd like them to transform into.  Unless, I happen to have one in mind).

1. Jazz - He was the initial character designed for the GT-R.  He is an iconic character and would easily fit in this series.

2. Sideswipe - He is forever one of my favorite G1 toys and I would love to see Takara incorporate the most aerodynamic car for Sideswipe.

3. Shockwave - He may very well be my favorite Decepticon.  Takara did a great job with him in Binaltech and I would love to see this character using the more detailed Alternity style.

4. Soundwave - Another evil favorite.  He was never used in Binaltech and to be honest, I don't feel we ever got to see a dynamic use of this character since G1.

5. Wheeljack - With all the unique Japanese race cars, this character would be the perfect opportunity to highlight one.

6. Starscream - I'm not a huge Starscream fan but he is one of the most iconic Decepticons and if Megatron can be a car, so can Starscream.

7. Prowl - With so many cool looking Japanese police cars, why not?

8. Rodimus - I just like Rodimus.  He has a good color scheme and he was once the leader of the Autobots.

9. Springer - I have always liked Springer and would love to see a car with a jewel green paint job.  It would add variety to the series.

10. Mirage - Here's an opportunity for Takara to make a new Formula 1 racer.  It would be just so darn cool!

Okay, so I could have easily rattled off another five or six names and I am completely aware that I gave more love to the Autobots but I just like them better.  There I said it.  Here are a few others that I hope to see: Ironhide, Grimlock, Ravage & Bombshell.

Enough with the Transformers Movie Toys!  09-08-09

I have expressed my dislike for the Transformers movie character designs more than a few times here.  As a fan of transforming toys and Transformers themselves, I am rather surprised that even though I don't care for the movie designs, I have still yet to see "Revenge of the Fallen".  Now that the Summer is virtually over I have reserved myself to just wait for DVD.  Nevertheless, I am not mad at Hasbro or Michael Bay for allowing such ugly and uncharacteristic robot designs.  Sure, I wish the movie designs would have gone more of the route as the Alternators which I feel display much more personality.  I genuinely feel the movie designs display very little individuality as they look like reanimated junk piles but thankfully, I am able to separate the movie stuff from the stuff I do like.  To me it is just another chapter in the Transformers universe which has housed many series that I was not crazy about such as Armada and Beast Machines.  The problem is, as a frequent toy buyer, I find that the trip through the action figure isles are not nearly as enjoyable as it should be.  Looking at the Transformers toys is truly an eye sore especially after such a well done series of toys as the Animated series just ended.  The only redeeming aspect of the movie figures are the Human Alliance series and with that line there are only two figures released, one I like (Bumblebee) and Sideswipe which was a disappointment.  Regardless, they still are based off of the horrendous movie designs.  Therefore, it is still hard to bring myself to buy them.

Transformers aren't the only toy line to blame for a lackluster Summer of toys.  G.I. Joe (another movie I have yet to see) are also clogging the toy isles.  I don't find these figures quite as distasteful as the Transformers movie figures but I have already moved on and I wish Hasbro would as well.  They could easily invigorate my enthusiasm by releasing the Resolute figures that have been pictured on various web sites.

Hasbro has really done some damage to my collecting excitement with these two brands that usually consist of most of my toy budget.  I can even throw Star Wars in the mix with so many Clone Wars and underwhelming figures in that line but as I see it, Star Wars is pretty much old news to me anyways.

I hope Hasbro hurries up and moves away from these movie brands that are keeping me away from the toy stores.  It is such a drastic change from last Summer when Hasbro had a good lineup with both Transformers and GI Joe not to mention I was a big fan of the Indiana Jones figures that unfortunately didn't find a big enough audience.  In the meantime, I have been enjoying Transformers imports, Alternity by Takara.  However, I have no idea the future of the line and the figures are being released a little too slowly to meet my robot fix.

A Tough Debate  08-17-09

For those who frequent the Transformers information sites, you may be aware of the recent announcement and pictures of iGear's smaller scaled Masterpiece Optimus Prime.  It seems to have caused a lot of controversy regarding whether this will be produced or if it should due to it unquestionably being a Hasbro copyrighted item and character.

I admit, it is questionable on whether this will get made but I do want one and will buy it if it ever gets produced.  Why?  Because I want it.  I don't think it is very ethical for someone to use someone else's creation to make a profit but I have a hard time with this because Hasbro, the owner of the Optimus Prime character and name, is not making the products I want.  So, if another company is, what am I to do?  I probably should not support this because I know how I'd feel if someone stole a property I created to make money but with that said, if I'm not using that property to appease the fans, then perhaps, I should let these "knock offs" slide as long as they are representing my property in a positive way.

I can rationalize it till I'm blue in the face and I still know it isn't right by legal standards but I am a collector and want nice items and if Hasbro is not going to provide them, than looking elsewhere may be the route to go.  Perhaps, if Hasbro decided to make high quality collector targeted products, then there wouldn't be these third party companies trying to fill the gaps of what us the collector's want and this collector wants this smaller scaled Masterpiece Optimus Prime!

Will we ever see an action figure resurgence?  08-14-09

Back in the 1980's action figures were what kids played with.  Sure there were other toys but action figures were king.  Now, with computers and video games conquering kids play, action figures have become more of a collector's and niche market.  Sure, there are some successful action figure series' such as the ever popular Power Rangers, Star Wars and Ben 10 has achieved quite a fan base.  I would love to see a resurgence.  Most toy companies are just rehashing all the old toy lines that were a big success from the 80's such as Transformers, G.I. Joe and even Masters of the Universe.  The only new concept that seems to be garnering any attention from what I see is Ben 10.  I think the toys are pretty cool and the cartoon is okay but truthfully, the last cartoon based toy line I really liked was the short lived Storm Hawks 4" figures.  I know we will never see another movie franchise success like Star Wars.  However, it has been so long since a fresh original movie had good toy sales.  I'm hoping James Cameron's Avatar may have a chance but from what I've seen, it doesn't appear like it may translate well with the youngsters.

I know I am just rambling but where is this generations GI Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K., Star Wars or even C.O.P.S. & Visionaries?  I just want to see something fresh on toy shelves that will help create a new generation of toy collectors in years to come.  As things are going, the future of kids growing up to re-buy all there old action figures really lies in the hands of Power Rangers, Transformers Yu Gi Oh and a few others.  I like that there is a collector's market for action figures made for us specifically but what about the children?

Hot Toys Aliens Snap Kits!  08-10-09

How did I miss these?  Hot Toys, the makers of the brilliant 1/6 action dolls have made a few sets of 4" scaled action figure snap kits.  I picked up a case of the amazing Appleseed Ex Machina snap kits but had no idea of the existence of a set from Aliens!  No, I'm not talking about the AVP Snap Kits based off the unwatchable movies.  I'm referring to the James Cammeron sequel to Alien.  In the set there are four human marines, Ripley, Hicks, Apone and Drake and the rest are of the Alien creature.  I know very little about these but they must have come out around 2007.  Each one comes in an egg shaped package.  I have done some searching around the web to try to find a set or even one figure for that matter with no luck.  Anyone out there who has a set they want to part with or knows a place that has them at a reasonable price, please let me know.  I'd love to add these to my collection.

Could GI Joe Rise of Cobra actually be good?  08-03-09

I know it's still early to take into consideration the few reviews that have been written about Rise of Cobra but thus far, they have almost all been positive or at least confessing it is pure entertainment.  I have been bashing this movie ever since it was announced that it would be directed by Steven Somers.  From the looks of the previews and stills it doesn't really look like the Joe I grew up with but I'm okay with that if I can be entertained.  I mean, what do you really want with a movie based on an action figure?  So, now with the positive buzz floating around, I may actually see this one but it's really the movie District 9 that has me really excited.

Random Ramblings  08-02-09

Not a great deal going on in the world of action figures.  The only domestic toy I am actively perusing is the Transformers Human Alliance Sideswipe.  I was very impressed with the HA Bumblebee and love the character design for Sideswipe (as far as the movie designs go).  I saw the hundred dollar movie Devastator toy and I can only communicate how big of a piece of crap it looks like.  I not only despise the design but it doesn't appear to be fun and not even close to a hundred dollar toy.  It looked like a forty dollar toy and only because of the size which still was not nearly as impressive as I expected.  It wasn't even as big as the Armada Unicron.  I am certain this will be a clearance item everywhere if many stores even bother ordering it.

Otherwise, I continue to hunt down the Mattel DC Universe figures with very little luck.  Boy, distribution sucks on those or they just constantly sell out and if that is the case, stores should be ordering more.

SDCC Final Thoughts  07-27-09

Okay, so I kind of slacked off with comments on the SDCC but in my defense, I had a crazy, busy weekend and to be rather honest, I think I pretty much commented on most.  For me, Mattel has provided me with the most excitement with both the DC Universe and Masters of the Universe series'.  It looks like the Indiana Jones stuff was a hoax (too bad) and other than that, everything was as expected.  I didn't comment on the new Mattel Mego styled superheroes.  I was born a year or two too late to be in love with Mego's.  I had a few but not many.  I'll get the Green Lantern as I am a big Green Lantern fan but the rest didn't blow me away but I am happy that Mego fans look to be finally getting some Mego styled superheroes that actually resemble Mego's.  Anyways, back to listing some new great items for sale.

SDCC Day 3 07-24-09

Unfortunately, I'm going to be swamped this weekend so my rants on new toys from SDCC will be few and far between.  So far, nothing really new today.  Mattel continues to excite with their DC Universe series, new pics and info on the Luke Jedi Knight have made me not completely lose hope yet.  It looks like he will have an interchangeable chest.  Um, there were a couple of cool figures shown for the Marvel Universe series, most notably, Thor.  Other than that, I look forward to hearing the Mattel panel on the MOTU Classics.  I've really started liking this series.  Maybe if I have time I'll be able to make a few updates.

Okay, Mattel has really pulled all the punches here thanks to the Four Horsemen!  The Masters of the Universe Classics series and DC Universe figures look fantastic!  I'd name off my favorites but I really dig them all.  I'm tempted to join the "Eternia Club"  However, $260.00 is a big chunk of money to drop at one time even though I have a feeling I'll be buying most of them anyways.  Oh, and yeah, the Ghostbusters figures look great too.  I just think Mattel is really going to milk the line with variants like Slimed Peter Vankman.  I just really want a set of the four main Ghostbusters.  Mattel may get most of my toy buying dollars this year.  I just hope their distribution improves.

SDCC Day 2 07-23-09

It's probably too early in the day to give my commentary but here it is:  Indiana Jones figures coming back?! This is great news!  NNo details have really been revealed but I really liked this series.  Someone made excellent custom MOTU Classics figures that looked so good, they completely fooled and excited me.  Oh well.  Some of the new Star Wars figures look nice but it looks like the one I actually care about, is weak.  Why can't they get Luke Jedi Knight right?  Neca is up to their old tricks.  Boondocks Saints?  I think it is an over rated cult classics but my brothers dig it.  Avatar is one of those sci-fi flicks I have been really excited for but the figures make it look pretty typical to today's sci-fi action films.  It looks like Mattel will be making both 4" scale and 6".  Perhaps I may check out the 4 inchers.  Let's see...I have to wait awhile for more GI Joe Resolute figures but at least they will be released and Transformers is at least releasing a few Animated figures for 2010.  I am happy that Hasbro will be doing a few more Human Alliance figures as those are the only movie toys that seem to interest me at all.  Well, if anything else pops up today, I'll update with my thoughts.

San Diego So Far  07-22-09

The show has barely began and as expected not much has caught my interest thus far.  Here's my take on what I've seen:  The MOTU Classics Battle Cat is awesome!  Wow!  This line is getting really fun!  Too bad they are so expensive.  I actually really like the look of Sideshow Toys 1/6 scale Duke.  I'm not a big 1/6 scale figure collector but this one is tempting.  However, the price is sure to make me pass on it.  Hasbro Toys has shown off some new Marvel toys and it looks like they are following the lead of every other toy company by revisiting the 1980's by expanding their Secret Wars series.  I like the look of some of the figures but I hate two packs.  They force you to pay for a figure you may not want to get the one you do. I've seen some pretty blurry pictures of some of the new Star Wars figures by Hasbro and there looks to be some interesting characters.  I am most looking forward to the Luke final duel but unfortunately, the picture was too out of focus to make a clear judgment.  It better look good.  Well, so far that's all I got.

The San Diego Comic-Con is here once again!  07-21-09

Every year around this time, I feel this over-whelming excitement and fear at the same time.  Why?  Because the SDCC is around the corner.  I get excited to see all the new action figures, movies and all other geek culture that is sure to take much of my money in the coming year.  Hence , my fear.  Don't get me wrong.  I want to see as many cool toys as can be offered but at times it can be overwhelming to see all the future toy releases at once.  Thankfully, the last couple of years, there has been less and less that I've desired and with Hasbro putting all their focus on the movie products for Transformers and GI Joe, I am sure to save some money there unless they have some sort of surprise up their sleeve.  I suppose as far as domestic toys go, I am most excited to see future releases from Mattel's DC Universe, MOTU and Ghostbusters.  As far as Hasbro goes, I guess I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of future releases from their 3 3/4" Marvel Universe series.  Other than that, I think most of my toy interest is swinging to overseas products such a, Takara Tomy's Transformers Alternity line and whatever other cool robot toys that come from Japan.  Who knows?  Maybe we'll finally see some real surprises this year like maybe some Thundercats figures?  I doubt it.  I'm sure I'll make some comments throughout the week in the Ramblings section of what I like, don't like or an ambivalent about.

If anyone goes and feels like picking up the Wonder Twins for me, it would be very appreciated.

Top Five Alternity Figures I want next!  07-19-09

Now it seems clear that Takara Tomy will be continuing the awesome Alternity series, I decided it was time to do a top five list.  What should be fun about the Alternity series is (like Binaltech's) every character will be a vehicle but unlike Binaltech, there is no limitation to what type of vehicle.  I think both Optimus Prime and Megatron are the perfect examples.  Most people would expect both characters to be of larger vehicles perhaps, even trucks but no, we finally get to see these guys as fast sports cars.  So, with that in mind, here are my top five (in no particular order):

1. Jazz - He's just such an iconic character to me.  Yes, he seems like an easy choice as he can easily be any fast looking white sports car but hey, he's Jazz!

2. Soundwave - Yes, another iconic character,  However, other than his original toy as a tape player and maybe the MP3 player toy, I never really felt he got a cool reimagining of the character.

3. Wheeljack - It's all about his head.  He has such a unique head in the Transformers universe, I would love to see another cool toy of this fella.

4. Springer - That's right!  I always liked Springer and with all the crazy Japanese racers, it wouldn't be uncommon for Takara to get that bright fluorescent green done right.

5. Shockwave - Another pretty obvious choice but he was done so well in the Binaltech series, why not give it another go in the new smaller scale?

I could have probably easily made this a top ten list because there are so many characters I'd love to see.  I'll just ramble off a few more:  Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Silverstreak, Hound, Skywarp, Perceptor, Ravage, Ironhide, Mirage, Grimlock, Shrapnel, Bombshell, heck, who am I kidding?  I want them all!

Transformers Excitement is Back Again!  07-15-09

I'll be honest, collecting Transformers hasn't been the same for me since the end of the Binaltech series.  I loved those toys with great passion.  There is nothing better than realistic cars that turn into cool robots and throw in a little die-cast metal and I'm in toy heaven.

When the Alternity Convoy was released, I was very happy and when Megatron was announced I was ecstatic to have a companion for Convoy.  However, I was pretty certain that this was just going to be one of many of Takara's short lived mini lines but yesterday when I saw pictures of a prototype Alternity Bumblebee, I was as giddy as a school girl.  Just knowing that there is a high quality Transformers series to collect again brings me so much joy.

I really love the Convoy.  Therefore expect great things for the future of Alternity.  I can't judge Megatron yet because I haven't gotten him yet.  I will not name names but the company I was ordering them from have consistently been incredibly slow getting them in stock and on top of that, they refuse to respond to my emails enquiring about the status.  I will surely stop ordering from this company that always received good feedback.

Anyways, back to the original point.  I finally get to imagine what characters may be next and what cars they may be.  It's about time there is a Transformers series to get excited for.

The Dome-0 Why you need to know about it and love it!  07-14-09

Most boys growing up owned Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars.  They were a cheap way to get our parents to shut us up when taking us shopping with them.  Plus, we loved them.  Some children preferred the realistic cars and some the crazy exotics.  For me, it was a little bit of both.

I remember the day I first discovered my favorite childhood car.  I was at a local drug store when I saw this beautiful sparkled blue exotic car that looked similar to the Lamborghini Countach with the doors that opened upwards.  The car was made by a generic toy company like AOKAY Toys or something similar but once I owned it, I had to find other versions of this car.  The only identification was at the bottom where it said Dome-0.  As a child, I always thought it was called Dome-O.  I found one or two other toy versions of the car and that was the end of it.

With the advent of the internet and the ability to research almost anything, I decided I would revisit the past and try to find out information on this childhood obsession.  However, when I first started researching, I found nothing until I realized that this vehicle was called the DOME Zero not the Dome-O.

Suddenly all the information and photos I could ever want was at my fingertips.

The Dome-0 was more or less a Japanese made car from 1978 that really never went beyond prototype.  It received a lot of attention at auto shows but due to some expensive specifications issues, it could not receive the funding needed to go into full production.  I could go on and on quoting multiple online sources regarding the car but this is an action figure site and I just hope if anything it will inspire you to research more about this interesting vehicle.  However, it is worth mentioning that it was a precursor to the Le Mans racer (or had something to do with it).

Even though I was born and raised in the Motor City and do appreciate a well designed car, very few have caught my attention like the Dome-0 and I have since started up my collection of toy and models of the rare car.  Most have to be imported from Japan.  Nevertheless, I have always been a fan of wedge styled cars, hence my love for 1980's European sports cars.

Random Ramblings  07-10-09

First, it's worth noting that I am surprised with how many movie G.I. Joe figures I think are cool.  I still think the movie is going to blow but at least the action figures are cool (not eight bucks cool).

Also, I am really finding myself gravitating much more towards import toys (mostly Japanese).  With the inflation on everything here in the states, especially action figures, it seems much more sensible to import the usually superior Japanese toys.  The only problem is, there are still a few American properties I like, like:  G. I Joe and DC Universe.  I guess that pretty sums it up though.

I am starting to think the San Diego Comic-Con is leaving a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to the over abundance of exclusives.  Every year there are more and more and they seem to be more desirable items then the year before.  Sure, Mattel' s making the Wonder Twins available on www.mattycollector.com without the monkey and I can live with that but if it is anything like any of the other figures made available on their website, I might as well save my time.  I am sure they will be sold out in an hour.  I sure hope Mattel has clued in that demand is higher than supply.  Anyhow, it has always been a dream to one day go to the SDCC but now I'm afraid that if I did go, I would not only spend the whole time waiting in line for exclusives but I would need to double the money I bring because of them.  Oh well, that's the hobby I guess.  Otherwise, I am sure to stay glued to my computer in hopes that toy companies reveal some cool toys.

Other than that, I was hoping a toy collector out there could help me out:  I need two M.A.S.K. figures to complete my collection.  The Miles Mayhem with helmet that came with Wolfbeast and the Jacques LaFleur Clone with helmet.  Any help would be so appreciated.

Oh, I still haven't seen Transformers 2 and decided that at this point, for the cost of two tickets, I might as well wait till it is released on DVD and buy it then.  I hear it is a real stinker and two and a half hours!?!?  Wow!  I don't know if I have the attention span for that.

MMC01 Heart of Steel Optimus  07-01-09

I normally don't go out of my way to promote fan made Transformers related products.  However, when I saw this http://mastermindcreation.blogspot.com/ I couldn't resist.  Not only am I a huge Optimus Prime fan but I am a sucker for that steel punk look and nothing says steel punk like an old steel train engine.  I still don't know what the finished painted product will look like or the quality of plastic.  However, from what I have seen thus far, this item is certainly on my short list and wanted to pass it along to those who may be interested.

Final Fantasy toys done right!  06-30-09

As someone who readily admits to being a geek of all things geek, I was never a huge video game fanatic.  It's not that I never appreciated them, I think it is a combination of having a short attention span and well, I was never any good at them.  However, I have always believed that some of the coolest characters and creatures have come from video games.  One game in particular is the incredibly popular Final Fantasy series.  I especially like the characters from Final Fantasy VII and to add to the coolness, a full length CG film was made honoring those characters called Advent Children.

As of late, it seems most popular video game properties get action figures produced by the independent toy companies that tend to make statues more than action figures (here's looking at you Neca).

For such a widely successful property such as Final Fantasy, Square Enix/Play Arts holds the license to make action figures.  I do believe this is a Japanese toy company that imports their figures to the US.  However, what great toys they are!

Square Enix has nailed every FF property they have attempted.  I am particularly fond of the action figures for Advent Children.  Each figure genuinely looks like it was taken right from the screen.  The highlight being, Cloud Strife and his awesome motorcycle.

Square Enix does not seem to be stopping any time soon with releases from the popular Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy Crisis Core.  The only thing I wish, is I could afford all these beautiful, well articulated action figures.  Sure at about twenty five bucks a pop, that ain't cheap but if it's quality over quantity, you are getting your moneys worth.

I hope to add some new Square Enix Final Fantasy action figures to my collection very soon and if you are a fan of the property, I recommend you do yourself a favor and pick one up yourself.  I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen  06-27-09

Okay, I still haven't seen this movie and though I still plan on it regardless of the awful reviews, it must be known that I am not seeing this movie expecting to see the next 2001: A Space Odyssey.  This is not to say I shouldn't expect an enjoyable film with well crafted characters and story but I can be entertained by fighting robots.  I can honestly say I am expecting the worst.  Hopefully, if anything, this will persuade Hasbro to take Transformers in a different direction to where they actually look like robots.  Movie review will be up in a couple of days.

Random Ramblings  06-25-09

It has been an incredibly long time since I have added any thoughts to this page.  I don't even know where to start.  Well, I guess I'll start with my computer crash.  It has been so frustrating.  Almost all is back in order thanks to Dave from www.bigislandtoys.com.  However, I am still trying to figure out how to add pictures to the site.

On another note, Transformers Revenge of the Fallen has hit theaters and although I have not yet seen it, it is getting awful reviews.  I suppose it is no surprise.  I really hate the majority of robot designs accept for Sideswipe as he somewhat looks like a Transformer.  I hope to see it this weekend.  I did pick up the Human Alliance Bumblebee toy and the more I play with it, the more I love it.  Other than the character design, it reminds me of an Alternator.  It is great fun and I look forward to the others in the series.

I am still waiting for the Alternity Megatron figure to be released in Japan.  Still no word.  I am curious if the line will continue or will it end with the two molds.

I am finding the inflation of new figures at retail hard to swallow especially when you can get some great vintage pieces much cheaper but as an addict, I keep supporting the new toy lines.  Some of my favorite domestic lines include:  Marvel Universe 3 3/4", Star Trek 3 3/4", DC Universe, Transformers Animated (even if it is almost done) and...well that is all I can think of.

Now Summer is here, I most likely will buy less new stuff and play catch up on the old but as soon as I can get my pictures working on the site, I expect to add many new reviews and items for sale.  So, check back often.

Peace

G.I. Joe Resolute!  Oh Yeah!  04-26-09

G.I. Joe has been around for a very long time and as a child of the 1980's, it was "A Real American Hero" that I loved most.  After the series ended there were some different incarnations of Joe and some featured some pretty cool figures and characters but nothing like ARAH.  The 25th Anniversary series was a Joe lovers dream come true.  I didn't care to see any fresh new takes on the classic series.  I just wanted to see all my favorites with updated sculpts.  All the stuff I have seen regarding the live action movie makes me want to throw up and even took away some of that renewed love for G.I. Joe down a notch.  That was until I saw the new adult themed animated G.I. Joe: Resolute!  Wow!  What a fantastic hour of entertainment!  It definitely made me forget about the awful looking movie and made me crave action figures from the Resolute cartoon.  I've already seen some pictures of upcoming action figures from the cartoon and I cannot wait to get my hands on them.  Kudos to who ever was responsible for Resolute.  It helps the sting of the movie hurt a little less.

Random Ramblings 04-20-09

April is almost over and we are about to hit Summer movie season.  Most of the toys to go along with the blockbusters are in stores already:  Star Trek (eh), Terminator; Salvation (so 1990's), Wolverine (not bad but a bit pricey) now we just wait for the sure to be disastrous movie G.I. Joe and Transformers toys.  I will by the Transformers Sideswipe and the new Optimus Prime as they look kinda cool but will skip out on the rest.  As for the Joe figures, they all look bad but I will get Snake-Eyes out of habit and possibly Storm Shadow.  It's going to be a rough Summer for Domestic action figures accept for the DC Universe figures which I can never find anyways.  I guess I'll be spending more time and money on cool Japanese imports.  One quick note, I've see a few episodes of the G.I. Joe Resolute cartoon and I wish Hasbro would have poured more resources into action figures for that because I would certainly buy them all.  What a cool and well animated show.  Hopefully we will see the likes of Flint, Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow as they appear in Resolute.

Quick Multiple Reviews  04-02-09

Since I've been engaged in this whole moving process, I have found quite a few figures I'd love to review.  However, by now, they are either old news now or I am honestly still kind of too busy settling in too give a proper review.  Therefore, I decided to give a quick rundown of some recent purchases.

Marvel 3 3/4" Deadpool - Cool little figure.  Well sculpted but I don't like the harness with the large sword holders and that giant Sai is ridiculous!

Marvel 3 3/4" Weapon X - What's with the face?  It's just plain ugly and the helmet does not fit well.  Here is a missed opportunity.

Marvel 3 3/4" Gambit - I like this figure.  I always liked Jim Lee's Gambit.  The card accessory is somewhat cheesy but...

Marvel 3 3/4" Movie Wolverine - Pretty nice figure.  It looks like Hugh Jackman.  I find the additional set of hands unnecessary.

Transformers 25th Cosmos- This is one cool redo!  One of the better Universe type figures.  And at $4.99 there was little guilt.

Transformers Universe Ratchet - Typical cheap plastic and awkward transformation as expected but I think Hasbro actually gave him a new head.

G.I. Joe Comic 2-pack Tunnel Rat & Storm Shadow - I surprisingly think the SS is cool but the Dice head is a weird accessory.  Tunnel Rat is okay but for such a popular character, he deserves a single carded version, better head sculpt and his big giant backpack with flashlights.

G.I. Joe 1/6 scale Snake-Eyes by Sideshow - This figure really does deserve a full review and I will try if I can make the time.  Nevertheless, for someone who isn't really into 1/6 scaled figures, this is a fantastic figure.  Tons of details and weapons.  A little pricey but I am happy I have it.

Final Rambling until I am moved in to the new place  03-23-09

Everyone who has ever moved knows how absolutely stressful it is especially when you are moving from state to state.  I am almost completely packed up with six days to go.  It's nice that I don't have to rush now to get everything packed up but it is also a drag cause I'm rather bored.  I just recently got my Alternity Prime and only had a couple days with them before they had to be packed up but those few days have convinced me that if the line continues the way it has began, it could take over Binaltech's rein of top Transformers line.

I have finally completed perhaps the most difficult series of figures to get and that is the second series Narnia figures by PlayAlong.  I'm sure to do a spotlight on them when I settle in.

Also, I will be getting the Sideshow Snake-Eyes in today and I will most likely not be able to open it.  If anything, I may be able to open the box and check out the figure itself but there is no way I'm going to load him up with all his gear just to put him back in the box.

I will be excided to get to the new place so I can set up my displays all over again.  Yes, it is something that can be stressful yet fun as well.  I just hope everything and everybody has a safe trip with no breaking or injury.

Anyways, when I get back on line and settled in, I expect to get in much more merchandise over the weeks.  So check back soon.

Transformers Alternity Rant  03-09-09

I haven't received my Alternity Prime figures yet.  However, I hope to get them by the end of the week.  In the meantime, I have read reviews and watched video's and he has now the most anticipated toy in a long while.  How long?  Perhaps since I first gazed eyes on Binaltech Smokescreen.

To understand Alternity, you need to understand the background a little bit.  In the early 2000's, Takara release the Car/Robot series which is a fantastic series full of quality and interesting transformations.  In the series was the "Car brothers".  This is the first time since G1 that we saw realistic automobiles transformers.  It was exciting to see these and the figures themselves were great albeit a little complicated.  If I had a complaint about the design of Car/Robots it was that some of the designs are unsymmetrical.  It made for an interesting change but I prefer a symmetrical robot.

Car/Robots led to an idea that would bring Takara and Hasbro even closer together.  They wanted to work together to produce a collector targeted series of realistic vehicles that transformed into detailed robots.  Takara wanted to go with the more compact 1/32 scaled figure.  However, Hasbro felt they needed to be larger in order to make any impact on American store shelves.  So they compromised on 1/24 scale.

When I first saw pictures of the first Binaltech/Alternators figure, Smokescreen I was in awe and to be honest, I thought he was in a 1/32 scale.  When I found out it was to be bigger I was disappointed for a brief moment as I always felt the deluxe scale Transformer was perfect especially for amassing a large collection.

Nevertheless, Binaltech's were released and I was obsessed.  I felt these were and still are the best Transformers series ever created.  Unfortunately all good things must come to an end.  What ended the series is questionable.  Hasbro says the money tied into producing each new figure was more.  Therefore they didn't see as much as a profit as in some other series.  On Takara's end, perhaps it was the influx of American vehicles that did not interest the Japanese consumer.

Here we are again, at the beginning.  This time Hasbro is out of the picture and it appears that Takara is doing what they originally planned, a series of highly detailed collector targeted Transformers and I can't be more excited.

To start off the series, Optimus Prime leads the way as a Nissan GT-R.  Many fans are confused or upset that he is not a truck but I am rather excited.  As a kid, I always liked the cars like Sideswipe, Jazz and Bluestreak.  I was never a truck guy.  I preferred fast. sleek cars.  However, the leader of the Autobots was damn slick and memorable both looks wise and character.  I just wished he was a car.  So, my wish has finally come true.

The design of Alternity is very sophisticated and looks like Takara has taken a few nods of the designs of some of the Gundam robots.  This may in fact be the perfect toy line for me.

The question is, how far will the series go?  After Optimus Prime comes Megatron and a repaint of Prime as Nemesis Prime but does Takara plan on keeping the series going?  I hope so.  I expect if it does most of the cars will be foreign.  I'd love to see a such characters as Wheeljack as a Japanese racer, Ratchet & Ironhide as a Scion XB and how about Bumblebee as a Mini-Cooper?  The Car/Robot series explored other automobile companies as well such as Lamborghini and Mercedes.  Therefore, perhaps we could see a Sideswipe and Trailbreaker.

The skies the limit with Alternity.  I just hope the series lasts beyond just Prime & Megatron.  I really would like to devote a showcase to these detailed, smaller automobiles that are going to be taking the mantle from the always amazing Binaltech.

March will be a crazy month and all I can think about is more action figures!  03-02-09

March is going to be absolutely nuts for me!  I'll explain more towards the end of the month.  However, amongst the craziness all I can think about are the toys I am most anticipating getting before the month is over.

First on my list without a doubt is the Alternity Convoy by Takara.  This toy looks absolutely beautiful!  I really can't wait to get my hands on this.  It's been awhile since I've had the opportunity to add a high quality die-cast Transformer to my collection.  I seriously hope this line continues strong in Japan as it doesn't look to disappoint.

On a more domestic front, I'd really like to get the Transformers Animated Wreck-Gar, Waspinator and Samurai Prowl before the months end so I can complete the Animated series before the atrocious movie figures over-saturate the market.  Oh, I'd also like the Mighty Muggs Optimus Prime.  Yeah, there's not much you can do with these things but I like the style and I am a huge Prime fan.

To my surprise, I am very interested in getting some of the Marvel Universe 3 3/4" figures regardless of their inflated price.  Mostly, I'd like the Wolverine Origins figures of the Tiger Stripe Wolverine, brown costume Wolverine and Gambit.  I certainly wouldn't mind getting an Iron-Man as well.  I haven't heard overall good remarks about this series.  However, I'd like to judge it myself.

Other than that I'd really like to get the DC Universe Classics Captain Marvel.  Yes, I'd like some of the newer assortments and even the Wal-Mart exclusives but this line is so hard to find at retail, I'd be happy just to find a Captain Marvel.

If I can find these by months end, I would be satisfied with my March haul.  The Alternity figures are already ordered.  It's just a matter of waiting for them to arrive and I'm getting quite antsy.

Crazy week and more!  02-21-09

The last week has been rather crazy, busy and what not.  So, if I've been a little slow with updates, I am sorry.  Please note, it may be a little crazy for the next month or so but I will continue to process orders and reply to email as quick as possible.

Now for a little rambling.  I've talked about the new Alternity Convoy from Japan by Takara Tomy with excitement as it is the closest series we may get to Binaltech's.  Could Alternity be even better?  That's a good question.  Alternity seems to be the series Takara wanted to do from the beginning: Highly detailed 1/32 scaled die-cast cars of real automobiles and that looks like what we are getting.

I saw a video review of the "Vibrant Red" Convoy and I must say, if I was excited before for this figure, I am even more so.  I love the smaller scale as it allows for a a larger collection with less space and perhaps some larger in scale vehicle.  It doesn't bother me that Optimus and Megatron are cars one bit.  I actually am embracing it.  Finally we get a sleek and slender leader of the Autobots.

What I question is the intentions of Takara Tomy with this series.  Will this just be Convoy and Megatron or do they plan on including more figures in the series?  I sure hope to see more.  I would love to see some of the obvious favorites such as Jazz, Sideswipe, Silverstreak and Hound but I question what cars would be used to add new figures.  The series is clearly a Japanese line where they are making all the decisions and let's face it, American cars are not too popular in Japan (or the US for that matter).  However, I would like to see some variety of automobiles and a lot of the Japanese automotive companies are churning out similar looking cars.  There lacks the mixture of a Jeep Wrangler or perhaps a Ford Mustang.  That is one thing Binaltech's really had going for them is the influence of the US market.  I would also hope to see such other styled cars such as Lamborghini's and other exotic vehicles.

Either way, from what little I've seen of the Alternity Convoy, he seems to really have improved on what I thought was perfection.  I just hope the price in today's economy doesn't discourage those from supporting the series.  However, I think it will be a factor.  I guess it's just wait and see at this point.

Toy Fair 2009!  02-14-09

The infamous New York International Toy Fair has slowly begun.  In the last few years Toy Fair has become less of a grand event for toy fans with other popular venues such as the San Diego Comic-Con where toy companies can show off their goods for future releases.  Nevertheless, Toy Fair reveals enough to keep me in front of my computer for a good couple of days.

It isn't quite day one yet but Hasbro seems to have gotten an early start by showing off their movie figures for both Transformers and G.I. Joe.  I must say, this years Transformers movie toys and designs are so terrible that the only one I am pondering on purchasing is the newly molded Optimus Prime.  Otherwise, they look like absolute garbage.  I can't wait till these movies are dead and gone and not because I don't enjoy the movies but I can't take anymore of these robot designs and toys to go with them.

As far as G. I. Joe, I'm in the same boat.  I may buy Snake-Eyes simply because I tend to buy most Snake-Eyes figures released but even he doesn't impress me.  The Storm Shadow looks okay but if these figures are eight dollars a piece, I'd rather spend my money on something else.

It seemed like last year at Toy Fair, Hasbro was king with Transformers Animated, G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary, Indiana Jones and Star Wars but thus far, they have turned out the ugliest products I've ever seen from one of my favorite domestic toy companies.  I will continue to comment as pictures are revealed.

2-17-09 - Well, I wanted to report on more of what's been shown at Toy Fair this year but I am rather disappointed.  I am actually a lost for words.

Ultimate action figure wish may come true!  02-08-09

There was once a time when I lived for Star Wars.  If the name Star Wars was on the packaging, I would buy it.  Clearly these days, you would have to be independently wealthy to make that happen besides, I found other products to take the place of Star Wars.  This is not to say I don't have any love for Star Wars there was just a total overkill and as I said, I was introduced to robots from Japan and other awesome products.

For years I was pretty much out of the Star Wars game.  There was a time when I would go to all the websites and drool when new pictures of figures were shown and I would pay a premium just to get the figures first.  However, from time to time, when I saw a new figure in the store that caught my fancy, I would buy it but that was the extent of my involvement with Star Wars.  That is until recently.  Not more than a couple months ago I got back into Star Wars figures collecting.  Not anywhere near how it used to be but I found myself picking up figures I skipped over that were pretty cool but I will have nothing to do with expanded universe figures which is a large focus for Hasbro these days and I admit, when it comes to the figures, it's the original trilogy figures that garner the most of my excitement.

I still rarely go to Star Wars websites however, I did something I haven't done in awhile, I paid a premium for two new Star Wars figures that are sure to be everywhere soon.  That's right, I had to have the new Luke & Han Stormtrooper figures.  I have wanted new versions of these figures since Hasbro finally started making nice quality figures but that's not what this is all about.  I did recently go to a Star Wars website and read a rumor that Hasbro has been working on an ultimate version of Luke Skywalker Jedi Knight.  Anyone who knows me knows this is a figure I've been waiting for forever.  It is clearly my favorite vintage figure and favorite costume the hero Luke ever wore.  Hasbro did make an okay version a couple years back but it was definitely flawed.  Mostly by the black cloak made of a cheap material.  On top of that, his knee articulation was awkward and his hand could not hold his gun.

I know this site isn't on Hasbro's radar but I hope if Hasbro is working on this figure, they put all their resources in it to finally make a flawless version of Luke as a Jedi.

Convention Season beginnings with the New York Comic-Con  02-06-09

The convention season begins with the New York Comic-Con.  This is a fairly new convention so it's hard to tell how many toy companies will be there reveling new products or if they will wait a couple of weeks for the International Toy Fair.  However, Hasbro has thus far revealed plenty from their new 3 3/4" Marvel superheroes line.  I haven't quite made an opinion of these yet.  I am a huge fan of 3 3/4" figures and I like Marvel superheroes just fine but I think in the last five years with all the Marvel movies and Marvel Legends toys, I got a little Marvel overload.  On top of that, this series seems like a serious commitment to start.  I don't think this is going to be a couple dozen figures but more like hundreds plus exclusives and variations.  I certainly don't think I can commit to that especially at a seven dollar per figure retail price tag but I will say, I already know I'll be getting a Moon Knight and a few of the Wolverine figures and who else knows what characters grab my attention.

Perhaps the biggest news reveled thus far is Mattel Toys making Ghostbusters movie toys in both 6" and 12" scales.  From what I've seen I am impressed.  However, I'm not sure who these are to be marketed towards.  They look like a series Neca would produce.  Mattel is definitely making some interesting decisions with the direction they take action  figures these days.  Personally, I'd love for them to get a hold of Thundercats.  I think the Four Horseman would pay perfect homage to them.

This is only the first day of the convention.  It will be interesting to see if Hasbro reveals some G.I. Joe and Transformers movie products and if other companies reveal some cool surprises.  As usual, I'll be glued to the computer.

Day 2 - Well, I think it is clear that only a few toy companies are embracing this con to reveal new toys.  Mattel is definitely the front runner on most and coolest items.  They have shown pictures of the next few MOTU Classics including: Hordak, Man-At-Arms & Tri-Clops.  I'm digging the Man-At-Arms that appears to include two heads, one with mustache and one without.  The Hordak is also a very cool update.  Mattel also revealed more of their plans for DC figures.  They are continuing their Target exclusive JLU figures with some of the coolest characters in the line yet.  How typical.  This is days after I gave up on the series and sold off most of my collection.  They have also shown some new figures for the suburb DC Universe series and I can say Green Arrow is a must.

Otherwise, I am still waiting for something at this show to blow me away.

It's Time for me to wiegh in on Summer's Toy movies  01-31-08

Although I said I was going to try to keep my mouth shut regarding my thoughts of the first Transformers film before it came out, I still found myself saying a few unkind words.  However, for 2009's Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra, I feel like being very vocal.  Therefore, if you are not interested in hearing one mans opinion, stop now.

I'll start with the easy of the two for me to comment on: G.I. Joe.  It has everything going against it:  One of the most uncreative director's making big budget films in Hollywood, the lack of style from what I've seen thus far and well, what's with all the black uniforms?

Why does everyone need to wear black leather?  It sort of takes away from what made Snake-Eyes so unique in a military force.  All I have seen thus far is a short teaser trailer and a picture of a half dozen action figures and vehicles and I can already prepare myself for a crappy movie and I don't even mean a fun crappy movie just a crappy movie.

Now with Transformers it is a little trickier because even after saying so many negative things about this film before watching it, I did end up having fun watching this one and even though I never found myself liking the robot designs, I kind of got used to them and I did end up buying a substantial amount of the toys.  However, the second film not only looks like overkill, the robots look even uglier (if that was possible).  To me they look like junk heaps of metal.  I see little personality and I really think I'm going to distance myself away from a great deal of the toys this time around.  I may buy the newly redesigned Optimus Prime toy and Sideswipe looks somewhat interesting.

Of course I will be at the theater opening night for both of these movies but I can't wait till they are over and Hasbro can get back to making toys not related to these movies.

Most anticipated for 2009, Thus far  01-08-09

It's a boring Sunday afternoon.  So, what better than a list?

Until the New York Toy Fair in February, we really won't know a great deal of what to expect action figure wise when it comes to 2009 and to be honest,  Toy Fair has been a bit of a let down over the past couple of years as the San Diego Comic-Con has become a bigger treat as to what to expect for the rest of the year and going into the near future.  Nevertheless, there are still a substantial amount of goodies that we as collector's know are going to be released in 2009.  Therefore( again out of boredom), I decided to compile the items I am most looking forward too and well, the items I expect to be the biggest disappointments. Here we go with the goods.

1. Masterpiece Grimlock by Takara Tomy - when it comes to Transformers, Hasbro's sister company Takara Tomy are the ones that for me release the high end items I really want to see.  Thus far, Takara Tomy has not really disappointed with their high end Masterpiece series and from what I've seen of the MP Grimlock, it looks like a brilliant piece of art and I look forward to displaying him next to my Masterpiece Optimus Prime (my all-time favorite toy to date).  MP Grimlock looks to have a great deal of play-value but I suppose for its expensive price, it better.

2. Alternity Convoy by Takara Tomy - Just like the MP Grimlock, I expect higher quality from Japanese toy company, Takara Tomy when it comes to Transformers.  I am still grieving the end of the awesome Binaltech series but Takara is giving Transformers fans what seems to be a similar series of realistic cars to robots and loaded with Die-Cast.  This time, these will be much smaller being more in scale with a deluxe Transformer (more room to display).  However, they carry the same hefty price tag as Binaltech's did.  To start, Convoy will be released in two colors, Nissan's signature color for the car, silver and a more Prime like red.  I admit to looking more forward to the red version as it will emulate the Transformers leader more.  As for the Transfans who can't get over the fact that Prime will finally be a fast car instead of a truck, well, your loss.

3. Mospeada Cyclone by Beagle/Toynami - it seems there is a trend here.  Everything I seem to be looking forward to most are ridiculously expensive.  The Cyclone from Mospeada has always been one of my favorite looking mechs. of all time and even though there have been cool versions of this design, it looks like this $200.00 eight inch version may be the best yet.

4. Dark Crystal Chamberlain by Neca - Here we go, a reasonably inexpensive toy for 2009 on my list.  I confess to being one of the biggest fans of the Dark Crystal and have purchased almost every toy like merchandise released (in my price range).  Finally, we will receive an action figure of the frightening Skeksis, Chamberlain.  Early pictures of this figure look great but I am hoping Neca (known for skimping on articulation) adds as much poseability as possible.

5. G.I. Joe 1/6 scale Snake-eyes by Sideshow - I'm honestly not that into 1/6 scaled figures even though which such companies as Hot Toys, Medicom & Sideshow, they have made me jealous that 1/6 scaled collector's are getting such great toys with so much detail while action figure collector's still get over-sized nerd Hummel's as collector targeted items.  Nevertheless, this Snake-Eyes looks like a brilliant figure loaded with tons of accessories.  Perhaps, too many.  I don't plan on collecting any more of Sideshow's G.I. Joe figures but Snake-Eyes is the man and I gotta at least have him.

6. Star Wars Luke Skywalker & Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise by Hasbro - Perhaps, neither of these figures are much to get excited about but I have been waiting for Hasbro to finally give us Star wars fans well sculpted and articulated versions of these two and it looks like they are finally going to deliver.  I just hope that Luke head doesn't ruin this silly anticipation for two figures that could have been easily customized.

Now on too the bad

1. Transformers movie toys by Hasbro - I have said it many times, although I enjoyed Transformers the movie, the character designs are so unappealing to this robot junkie.  I've had arguments with a variety of Transfans over this but I can't change my mind.  I think the robots look like metal scrap heaps. Therefore, I have to endure a year of seeing these designs on toy shelves.

2. G.I. Joe movie toys by Hasbro - Just when Hasbro has finally got G. I. Joe right again after all these years with the 25th Anniversary series, they had to go get Steven Sommers to direct a Joe movie.  I anticipate an absolute train wreck and if the character designs are any indication of what to expect toy wise, than I will be saving a lot of money on G.I. Joe products in 2009.

3. Star Trek & Terminator: Salvation 3 3/4" figures by Playmates.  I'm not sure these should really be in this category just yet but as a 3 3/4" figure junkie, I have been very excited about collecting both of these series'.  However, early pictures of these figures have me extremely disappointed.  Hopefully, they are just that, early prototype pictures cause I would love for these to be nice looking figures.  Playmates has a good track record.  So, perhaps, these can be deleted from this list.  Only time will tell.

Oh, I'm sure there will be much more for both categories revealed in the next month that will get me excited or bring me great disappointment.  However, these are what comes to mind at this moment.

To Collect or not Collect?  That is the question.  01-14-08

As a passionate and dedicated toy collector, I have accepted that I can not collect everything.  Thankfully for me, I've been into this hobby for a great deal of time.  Therefore, my need to finish up vintage lines are few and far between.  This leaves most of my money to be spent on new released items.

With the economy in the state it is, I like many others have been hit.  Therefore, I have to be careful of what I collect.  There are certain series' that are must haves for me such as Transformers Animated and whatever high end Transformers Takara Tomy is releasing such as Masterpiece's and Alternity.  Also, G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary have proven a must and I have even gained interest in Star Wars figures again.  Thankfully, I am not a completist and just buy figures from the movies that I deem worthy.

With a new year, there are certain to be new series' that peak my interest such as Terminator: Salvation 3 3/4" figures and Star Trek 3 3/4" figures from Star Trek.  I'm not the hugest fans of those franchises but I am weak when it comes to 3 3/4" figures.  They are just so perfect for me.

So what else has me on the fence in 2009?  Well for starters, do I get involved in Hasbro's Marvel's 3 3/4" figures?  I am sure to pick up some of my favorite Marvel characters but I feel this collection is going to be more of a headache than enjoyment to collect and to be honest, the jury is still out on whether I like the aesthetic of the figures.

Perhaps my biggest conundrum is, do I continue to collect Mattel's DC Universe figures?  I have always been a bigger fan of the DC Universe and love the overall approach Mattel has taken with this series.  However, they seem to be pumping out more figures than I can keep up with and they aren't cheap either.  To add to the frustration, Mattel is making many exclusives that are hard to get or 2-packs that are less than desirable.  Sure, I can just buy what I like.  Unfortunately, I like the majority of what I've seen which would leave me just missing a handful of figures.  Sometimes when it gets to that point the OCD in me just says, get them all.  Now, there is no question I will be getting Captain Marvel, Hawkman and the classic Dr. Fate but do I make this series a focus in 2009?  I am still unsure.  I suppose it depends on what else there is out there to buy.

While 2009 will be reserved for Transformers and G.I. Joe movie toys (both of which I am not into the designs) it does leave some openings.  However, I am certain I will buy a few movie Transformers mainly because I love playing with the darn things.

So where does this leave me?  Basically, my concern is do I accept I will no longer complete the DC Universe figures or keep it going?  It is such a tough call because I was committed to Mattel's JLU series until they became Target exclusives and it started to get far too expensive buying multi-packs to get one figure.  It's sad because I really like those figures.  I suppose I will see how it goes.  If I happen to find them and have a little extra dough at the time, I may buy them.  However, if it's too challenging and expensive, I will have to just buy figures here and there.

Sometimes I wish toy lines didn't pump out quite as many figures as they do.  Variations and exclusives are my public enemy number one.  They serve a true action figure enthusiast no purpose at all.

Yellow Testing Day 3 final results  01-10-09

Well, I was fortunate to have a day of lot's of sun.  Therefore, I placed the jar outside to soak it all in and the results speak for themselves.

I am more than impressed and cannot wait till try other yellowing figures!

Yellow testing Day 2 plus some random rambling  01-09-09

So, as I wrote below, I have embarked on a mission to find the cure for plastic yellowing.  On day 2 not much has changed.  However, I notice the peroxide is bubbling a bit.  Also, we did get some sun today which is good news.

On another subject,  many new pictures have surfaced of Transformers Revenge of the Fallen movie toys.  I can't tell you how many of these will be in the movie but just as in the first film, these character designs are just awful.  None of them have any personality.  There is just way too much going on and I highly doubt I will be buying nearly as many of these toys as I did for the first movie.  It is worth noting that a picture of a new movie Optimus Prime has surfaced and from what I've seen it looks fantastic.  I know I will likely buy that when I first see it.  However, I am sure to get burned as Hasbro will certainly release a improved "premium" version months later.  I guess I am a sucker for good old Prime.  As I said a million times, I enjoy the Transformers film for what it is but someone should have taken away the rights from Michael Bay from making creative decisions because these robots are a mess.

2009, thus far seems like it may be a cheaper year for me when it comes to buying domestic toys.  This is a good thing as 2009 will be a year of major transition for me.  Without G.I. Joe 25th figures (with movie figures in its place) and the same for Transformers, that leaves a lot of my toy buying dollars opened.  I'd really like to keep on going with the DC Universe figures but these things are coming out so quickly and I am still only on series 4.  Plus at ten to twelve bucks a pop, I don't know.  With the NY International Toy Fair coming soon, I guess we'll get a better glimpse of what is to come.

Can toy yellowing be a thing of the past?  01-08-09

A couple of weeks ago, I found a thread in a forum which I posted somewhere in the Ramblings regarding a couple of guys who have apparently found the way to fix action figure yellowing.  If you are an action figure collector then you know that toy yellowing is public enemy number one for collectors who open their action figures and for some who don't.  For whatever reason, certain plastics (most notably white) after time and certain exposures to who knows what, can turn colors (mostly a yellow).  Well as I said, in this thread the experimenters seemed to discover that using Hydrogen Peroxide (preferred food grade 35%) in a jar in sunlight will reverse the effects.  Their before and after picture's were inspiring.  So, I ordered a bottle and thought I'd give it a try.

First and foremost, you must be careful when handling any chemicals and I don't recommend doing this without researching this more.  If you do decide to, at least wear gloves cause you do not want to touch this stuff.

I decided to start this experiment with a Starcom Tony Barona figure (he was the all white figure that came with the Starbase headquarters and is quite hard to find).  Mine was fairly yellow and he can be hard to replace.  In addition, I threw in an Action Masters Jazz that turned quite yellow.

The process is said to take about 3 to 4 days depending on sunlight.  Seeing I'm in Vermont, I wasn't sure I'd be so lucky since sun can be quite infrequent.  However, I am happy to report that only after a couple hours, I can already see a difference.  This is very exciting for me as action figure yellowing is my number one pet peeve of collecting toys.  I will continue to update the results as I continue this experiment.

2009 and the future of quality transforming robots  01-01-09

Here we are.  Another year has gone by and it has been a good one for action figures in general.  As far as Transformers go (one of my most discussed and loved toy lines), I would say, because of the Animated line, there was some excitement.  However, I am predictable to say I really miss the days of collector marketed Transformers.  What A surprise, I'm referring to Binaltech's.

I've accepted the fact that Binaltech as a series is done and will always remain a high point in collecting for me as there were very few toy lines that got me as excited.  Why do I constantly keep going back to talking about Binaltech's?  Well, because I believe they are a work of art.  What inspired me this time was, out of shear boredom, I decided to look through my many toy reference books and low and behold there was my Japanese produced Binaltech book.  As I was looking through it, it made me realize what true gems these are.  They are of such a higher level than any other Transformers series that Takara produced a beautiful book on the short lived line.  I so wish they would produce a second volume.  However, it is very unlikely that will happen.  Even though I can't read a lick of Japanese, it is clear in the pictures that this was a project of love.  Other than the Transformers Masterpiece series, I ask myself, will we ever see such a series again?

Enter 2009 and a possible chance of high quality robot's with Takara Tomy's Alternity.  Alternity appears to be marketed as a similar concept as Binaltech's with highly detailed realistic die-cast cars.  There are some differences though:  Instead of the vehicles being in a 1:24 scale, they are now a smaller 1:32 scale.  This is not a bad thing to me.  It allows more room for these collectables.  Another added feature is each figure will have some of the auto-morph technology used in the Transformers movie figures.  Again, I don't think this is a bad thing as I rather enjoyed the feature.  So far it sounds like a winner right?  I think so.  However, many Transformers fans are not warming up to the concept.  Many are disgruntled that the first and second release will be Optimus Prime & Megatron.  However, instead of them appearing as their signature alternate modes, both will be cars.  I personally do not have a problem with this as I always wanted to see the classic look of Optimus Prime as a fast car but Transformers purist don't seem to be biting.

I think it is fair to speculate that the success of a series has much to do with the importing of American and other international dealers.  Perhaps, this is why Binaltech failed.  Many were hoping for a second coming of Generation 1 instead of embracing the fun new interpretation of these well loved characters.

I look forward to the Alternity series perhaps more than any other Transformers line I know about in 2009.  If anything is discouraging it is that each figure thus far seems to be getting two paint jobs and at about $50.00 a pop, this can get expensive.  Whether Alternity is the second coming of high quality collector marketed Transformers is still yet to be seen.  However, I am definitely routing Takara Tomy on.  Ever since Binaltech ended, my love for Transformers has sunk to minor enthusiasm.  I think the Transformers brand deserves a series of robots that are clearly made with love even if I have to pay for the higher quality.  Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for Masterpiece Grimlock but one or two Masterpiece figures a year just doesn't fill that void but they do help fill up space rather quickly.
